Metaphor is a figure of speech containing an implied
comparison, in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one
thing is applied to another. A metaphor is a
comparison that shows how two different things are similar in one important
way. Or is described as "a
figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically
dissimilar.
Example :
Her home was a prison
1. A feeling that is described in terms of
"butterflies in the stomach",2. A "heart beating like a drum", or "just going blank".
A simile is a figure of speech consisting of a comparison using like or as. Well-chosen similes can be used to enliven writing or as an alternative to description using adjectives. Simile are very close to metaphors but simile is an analogy that compares one thing with another thing of a different kind. Simile is an expression that describes something by comparing it with something else using the word like or as.
Example :
1. “cute as a kitten,” comparing the way someone looks to the way a kitten
looks
2. as busy as a bee” comparing someone’s level of energy to a fast-flying
been
3. She isn't as beautiful as her mother was in her youth
4. Your smile is like a flower
SYMBOL
A symbol signifies or stands for something else.
Usually that something is concrete. It is not common for a thought or feeling
to develop into a symbol as symbols are universal and represent cultures,
traditions and religions of family of origin. Something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or
convention, especially a material object used to represent something invisible.
Example :
1. The
dove is the symbol of peace
2. The
eagle is a symbol of the united states
3. A weighing scale is a symbol of justice
